Ultum Nature Systems Controsand is a line of decorative sand substrates designed for use in planted aquariums and aquascaping. Vesuvius Controsand is a chunky gravel made from Black Lava Rock. Its porous surface supports a healthy ecosystem while its inert composition is ideal for freshwater aquariums. The substrate is versatile and can be used as a standalone choice or in combination with your favorite cosmetic sand. Vesuvius Controsand would work particularly well in shrimp tanks!

Whether you're setting up your first aquascape, or you've been in the hobby for years, Controsand is easy to use. Just rinse the substrate gently to remove finer grains, then spread it evenly in your aquarium for a naturally earthy tone.

DRY vs. WET

  • Root Development Support: Controsand's unique granule composition encourages strong root development, ensuring your plants anchor securely into the substrate and absorb nutrients effectively. Black Lava is naturally porous and will provide the perfect surface for supporting plant growth, if desired.
